Road to Wrestlemania XXVII, Part Two

Road to Wrestlemania XXVII, Part Two

This is part two of the X-Blog’s Road to Wrestlemania series, where each week I will do my best to prognosticate what the card of Wrestlemania XXVII will look like based solely on the events of the past week in WWE. So, be warned, because this might contain spoilers.
Divas Match: There was almost no forward progress in the divas division from last week to this one, but what else is new? Eve is still the Divas Champion. The Bellas are bonafide heels now and it seems LayCool is on the road to Splitsville. None of this is seemingly indicative to Wrestlemania, as I doubt the Bellas will be involved in a Divas Championship match. However, this does give Layla a little more prominence as she could be a part of the proposed six-pack challenge match from last week. If you take out Kelly Kelly, who was ‘fired’ last week, the Six Pack Challenge now looks like it’s between Natalya, Beth Phoenix, Eve Torres, Michelle McCool, Layla and Awesome Kong. Albeit, I have my doubts that WWE will use Awesome Kong at all.
United States Championship: I hold firm that WWE should not only give us a competitive United States Championship, but it should be the opening contest. I remember back to Wrestlemania X-7 when Chris Jericho and William Regal opened the PPV with an Intercontinental Title match. That match set the stage for what is now widely regarded as arguably the best Wrestlemania in history. Daniel Bryan could more than fill Jericho’s shoes, and William Regal hasn’t lost a step. If not Regal, then Tyson Kidd would substitute perfectly. Speaking of Jericho, I wouldn’t mind if he were Bryan’s opponent either. That match would be perfect!
King vs Cole: Oh, I really don’t want to see this match, but it seems like it’s gonna happen whether I want it to or not. It could be this match or a ‘Jerry Lawler vs Alex Riley’ match where Micheal Cole would serve as the Special Guest referee. Either way, this match is going to blow. I just can’t believe how much WWE effort WWE is putting into making this match happen as opposed to, I don’t know, every other match on the card.
Intercontinental Championship: I strongly doubt the ‘Swagger vs Kingston’ match will happen at Elimination Chamber or Wrestlemania now that they’ve made Kofi Kingston into Alberto Del Rio’s stepping stone on his way to Wrestlemania. Kingston is too good to be cast aside like this. He could be in the middle of a excellent rivalry leading to a decent match with any of the other young heels on Smackdown, instead he’s being wasted on a rivalry with Del Rio that he cannot win. But there is still a good six weeks between Elimination Chamber and Wrestlemania XXVII where a good rivalry for the IC Title can be developed. Surely, WWE wouldn’t keep a talent like Kofi Kingston off the card. Or would they…?
Big Show & Kevin Nash vs Ezekiel Jackson & Wade Barrett: The rumor is that the proposed Undertaker vs Wade Barrett match has been scrapped, leaving Barrett available to be in a different match. Since it doesn’t seem like this rivalry between Big Show and Ezekiel Jackson will be settled at Elimination Chamber, all signs point to Wrestlemania. I suspect by then, Big Show will have gotten backup against the Corre… huge backup in the form of a Diesel. If it happens, this tag team match will most likely be slow and unspectacular, but I’ll still be interested just due to Nash and Barrett.
Tag Team Championships: Speaking of tag teams and The Corre, it seems more and more likely that Gabriel & Slater will become 2-time Tag Team Champions by the time Wrestlemania rolls around. And since the brand extension is basically non-existent between the months of January – April, I expect The Corre to have plenty more run-ins with The Nexus in the six weeks between PPVs, leading to a tag team match between Gabriel & Slater and two random members of Nexus. I want it to be Harris & McGillicutty, but there’s no guarantee Husky Harris will be back from injury (read: have lost weight) by then.
Triple H vs Sheamus: If you believe the rumors that have spread this week, Triple H will return to face Undertaker at Wrestlemania XXVII where HBK will be the Special Guest Referee. I don’t believe that for a second. There’s no reason for it. I do believe that Triple H will return by Wrestlemania, probably on 2-21-11, just like Undertaker is supposed to. But when he does return, he’s gunning for King Sheamus. WWE doesn’t do consistency well, but I doubt they’d ignore a hole that big in the storyline.
Undertaker vs Kane: Speaking of Undertaker and plot-holes, didn’t someone bury Undertaker alive? (Get it? A ‘plot’ hole? Nevermind.) Anywho, I think at Wrestlemania XXVII, we will receive the third rendition of Undertaker vs Kane at Wrestlemania. I think Undertaker is fragile right now and if he’s gonna face anyone at Wrestlemania, it needs to be someone he’s comfortable with. No one fits that mantra better than Kane. I do hope they add some type of stipulation or gimmick to this match to make it more interesting, though. This rivalry can tend to get a bit boring.
World Heavyweight Championship: First, let me address an ongoing storyline involving the World Heavyweight Title. I’ve been so annoyed by the use of Divas in the past two World Title matches, that I completely overlooked the main point of the conclusion of Smackdown’s main event. Edge speared Dolph Ziggler, which made him lose the title per the rules from Vickie Guerrero. So, does that mean Dolph Ziggler is the new World Heavyweight Champion? I hope so! I hope they make it to where both Edge and Dolph are World Champs until the Elimination Chamber, where one of them (namely Edge) or any of the other four competitors (still Edge) will win the title himself. Now, onto, the World Title match at Wrestlemania XXVII. It’ll be Edge vs Alberto Del Rio in the end. I think we all know that. But the above scenario is a nice go-between.
WWE Championship: The best part about the John Cena vs CM Punk match on RAW was that it was Cena vs Punk. This lets the audience know that even though The Miz is now Cena’s main rival, his feud with Punk is still ongoing. The same goes for Punk and Orton. WWE has a tendency to sometimes make rivalries so one-sided, that they forget about the other facets of said rivalry. It’s important that they remember that each rivalry has two sides, which is why I was so happy when they actually allowed CM Punk to state a legitimate reason as to why he and Nexus attacked Orton. In a fatal fourway, that’s doubly as important. They don’t need to go so bogged into Cena vs Miz or Orton vs Punk, that they forget about Cena vs Punk and Orton vs Miz. They’ll also need to develop a Punk vs Miz rivalry as well as Cena vs Orton. I suspect that latter one won’t happen though.
